Background Story
Lance Alvers and Kitty Pryde, are, quite frankly, a match right out of love story. There's the bad boy no good girl would go near and of course, the good girl who wants to be near the bad boy. Or something like that.
The twosome first meet in The X-Impulse, and I'm under the impression that they both lived in Illinois before arriving in Bayville due to their respective mutations. During that episode, Kitty is trapped in a locker by gym classmates and in her panic, phases out - right into the arms of the very surprised Lance who'd been in the midst of vandalizing lockers with spray paint. It's Lance who first reaches out to Kitty, who's trying to deny her newfound powers, and it's him who demonstrates his earthquake-inducing abilities to her.
Kitty: No, you're just like some freak! Leave me alone!
Lance: You can run but you can't hide. Cause I'm gonna rock your world.
She's intrigued by the older boy and he convinces her to try out her powers by phasing through the locked office doors, intending on stealing exam papers when she unlocks the door from the inside.
Kitty is soon recruited by the X-Men and realizes that Lance, while admittedly nice to her, is not the type of guy she's expected to hang out with.
There's not much interaction between the two of them until a little later in Middleverse - and even then, it's not exactly scintillating lover-conversation. Last I saw, Avalanche was trying to knock out Shadowcat.
Lance: You and me got a date, pretty kitty. How 'bout a ride on the concrete coaster?
Kitty: Lousy ride, loser!
Again, there's been better dialogue examples. It's not until second season that the field starts to open up some more. From the very start of Growing Pains, it's known that Lance has suddenly changed his mind about Kitty.
Fred: Yeah. I don't even know what we're doing at school, anyway.
Pietro: But we do know what Lance is doing here. He'd like to get a certain Kitty stuck in a tree. K-i-s-s-i--ow!
Trying to impress Kitty, Lance decides to bring the gymnasium scoreboard down on the new principal, which doesn't exactly strike brownie points. There's an attempt to convince her to go out with him, which is soon shot down by the arrival of Scott.
Kitty: Lance, just forget it!
Lance: Hey, I said I was sorry for the scoreboard thing. Come on, don't be mad.
Kitty: Lance, you can be such a jerk sometimes!
Scott: Alvers, leave her alone.
Lance: Hey, go recharge our batteries, goggle boy. This is between me and her.
More goes on, but Kitty soon starts to see the softer side of Lance in biology class. They joke over making stink bombs and then an episode like Joyride comes around.
Lance decides to join the X-Men to be around Kitty. There're some of the sweeter moments, including a talk in his room and him "rescuing" her rather than his assigned victim during a practice session. After incidents where he's blamed for the new recruit's actions, Lance finally decides to leave... but not before Kitty gives him a kiss on the cheek, which may be eternally emblazoned in a hardcore Lancitty fan's mind.
In Shadow Dance, it's revealed that the two of them talk outside of class more often and maybe it's not unreciprocated love on Lance's side, exactly.
Rogue: Not enough sleep? You and Lance were still on the phone at 1:30. So did you ask him?
Kitty: To the dance? No. You know what everyone around here would say.
But sure enough, the two of them head to the dance, and they have a relatively good time, minus the whole fabric of time opening thing. The teasing of Lance back at the Brotherhood manor doesn't go unnoticed as he's mocked over his "Pretty Kitty" and such. It's in The HeX Factor, that his protective nature comes out towards Kitty.
Knowing full well that the newest Brotherhood member, Wanda, would be liable to wipe the floor with the X-Men, he slips to Kitty and tries to pull her away from the ensuing chaos. He reveals that he doesn't want her to get hurt and there's a quick glance at him before she finally phases through him to help her team.
Ever since that episode, things have gone slightly awry. In the third season, the two of them are separate for the most part, and in Mainstream, Kitty makes the mistake of addressing Lance as just another 'hood' guy. His eyes betray his feelings for just seconds before he turns and continues the mayhem we was about to start.
